Compete Like a Buffalo

The message above — Compete Like a Buffalo — encourages our fans to compete with PRIDE, PASSION, and CLASS.

“We want to encourage Buff fans to be the best fans in the nation: that means having pride in our program, passion at the games, and respect towards other fans attending Folsom Field,” said Tyler Hartung, program manager of The Herd and organizer of this years’ Compete Like a Buffalo campaign.

The Compete Like a Buffalo campaign encourages fans to show up early, wear gold, and cheer loud! Fans are also encouraged to be aware of their game day actions, especially around children and opposing fans.

“We know emotions run high on gameday – we want that from Buff fans! At the same time we want to encourage fans to make sure everyone enjoys the game by not cursing around children or belittling visiting fans,” says Hartung.

“There are two types of class, first and no,” said CU football coach Dan Hawkins. “Competition is about respect and testing your limits of poise and performance. Anything less than your best diminishes a positive experience.”

Fans can help CU by packing the stadiums at the start of every game with energy and enthusiasm and by being respectful of others visiting Boulder. Help add to a positive game day experience that encourages more fans (students, children, everyone) to come support the Buffs. This will push the success of YOUR TEAM even further. Be proud of YOUR TEAMS’ history and future.

Fan will hurt CU by getting kind of loud… eventually…say by the middle of the first quarter. Also, we will lose the game day support of some Buff fans, their kids, and their families by being rude and cursing or by heckling any opposing fans that come to town. This will cause CU to have a bad reputation and make it even harder for our athletes when they travel to away games.

TAKE PRIDE IN OUR PROGRAMS HISTORY AND ITS FUTURE

We were the 1990 Football National Champions, we have the greatest mascot in the nation, and we just had one of the strongest football recruiting classes in the nation.

PASSION

COME EARLY, BE LOUD, WEAR GOLD! WE NEED YOU THE WHOLE GAME.

Students in Stands 2 inch wide better

YOUR TEAM feeds off of YOUR ENERGY. We need you to get there early! From Ralphie’s run to start the game through the 4th quarter, you play a crucial role in the game. Not only do you pump the players up, but you disrupt our opponents’ game plan too. BE BOLD, WEAR GOLD (except for the West Virginia game – wear black at that one!)

CLASS

RESPECT FELLOW BUFF FANS & OPPONENTS BEFORE, DURING, & AFTER GAMES

So please help us convey that our program is one of class both on an off the field by:

  • Respect Your Team: Never boo them, don’t throw things on the field, and tell others to do the same – its ok to tell people that what they are doing is not ok!
  • Being respectful of opposing fans when they come to Boulder. Welcome them to our beautiful campus.
  • Being aware that if you swear at games, kids are usually within earshot.
  • Rooting for Your Team, not against the other team (don’t boo when an opposing player is down with an injury)
  • If you drink alcohol, know your limit and stay well under it.
  • If you witness an unruly fan, inform an usher. Telling an usher is the best way to send the message that a fan’s behavior is inappropriate.

This is what is means to “Compete Like a Buffalo” with pride, passion, and class.
